One afternoon, a man asked his wife what she’d like for her birthday. “I’d really love to be ten again,” she replied hopefully.

On the morning of her birthday, the husband got up early, made her a nice breakfast and then took her to the local amusement park. He put her on every ride in the park—the Slide, the Roller Coaster(过山车) and the Wall of Fear…They tried everything there was in the park.

When they went out of the park five hours later, she felt tired and hungry. Right away, they hurried to a McDonald’s where her loving husband ordered her a Happy Meal with a chicken hamburger and a large cup of chocolate shake.

   In China, a host usually serves a visiting guest a cup of tea first when he enters his house. It is a traditional custom in China. But do you know how to serve a cup of tea to a visiting guest? Well, in different places, the ways of serving tea are different.

In Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces, a clay cup is usually used to brew(冲泡) Longjing, Biluochun, Maojian or just green tea. Chrysanthemum tea is sometimes used in the hot summer season to reduce the hot from outside.

Serving a cup of tea is a very popular custom in the North China cities. In the colder north-eastern provinces, the hosts would provide warm black tea with sugar for their guests.

Serving tea to guests is a common practice in China. However, different tea is used in different places. In Inner Mongolia(内蒙古), a guest is usually treated with milky tea. In the Jingpo family, you would be given baked tea (tea in water and baked in an oven to be made hot).

   The human brain weighs about 1.4 kilograms, but it can hold much more information than most computers. However, there is another difference between human brains and computers. Computers don’t forget information they are given, but humans often do. No one remembers everything, and luckily we don’t usually have to. But everyone can improve their memories if they want to. Here are some suggestions.

Try to use new information immediately. For example, if you meet someone who says “Hi! I’m Carlos”, don’t just say “hello”. Repeat the person’s name and say “Hello, Carlos”.

Break a big number into small parts. For example, it’s hard to remember 109244153. But if you break it into three parts—109/244/153, it will become easier.

Write down what you need to remember over and over again. This will help you keep it in mind longer, especially when memorizing formulas or facts.

Always review information. If you bring what you’ve learned back to your mind, it’ll become easier to remember. For example, before you go to sleep, it’s a good idea to review the new things you’ve learned that day.

Discuss things with friends. It is always easier to remember things through discussions. You can have a discussion about what’s right or wrong, and it will lead to the right answer.

Yuan Longping is a Chinese agricultural scientist and educator. He is known for developing the first hybrid rice (杂交水稻). He was born in Beijing in 1930. He loved playing the erhu, swimming and motorcycling. He graduated from the Southwest Agriculture College in 1953. Then he began teaching at an agriculture school in Anjiang, Hunan Province.

In 1960, a very serious food shortage happened in China. A large number of people died of hunger and illnesses. Yuan Longping could hardly fall asleep at night. He thought it was time for him to do something for his country and people. He decided to find a way to solve the problem. Since then, he had devoted himself to the research of a new kind of rice.

In 1964, Yuan found a natural hybrid rice plant by accident. It had more advantages than others. He worked very hard with other scientists on it for many years. In 1973, the first hybrid rice appeared. It yielded (出产) 20% more than that of common rice. Chinese people solved the food problem by their own efforts.

But Yuan Longping didn’t stop. He kept on his research. Now the “Super Rice” yields over 1,100 kilograms each mu. Chinese people have enough rice to eat, and hybrid rice has also brought good news to the people of many other countries all over the world.

By the achievements, Yuan Longping is called “The Father of Hybrid Rice”.
